Most seasoned riders prefer to ride to places that are somewhat remote and usually prefer to take the road less traveled. And the road less traveled is often not as well maintained as others. But, the destinations that those old roads bring you to are almost always the most incredible. Somewhere between smooth and glassy and dirt roads of Northern California are the “Goat” roads. And goat roads range in various stages from bumpy to almost pure gravel/dirt. So if you are a goat road enthusiast, then this is the ride for you. If you love the challenging back roads that wander through the roads of yesteryear, then we have plenty for you. This is the Super Goat. A goat road enthusiasts dream.
This guided motorcycle tour takes us to Northern California on some of the best goat roads known to man. Or at least as close as you can get without an adventure motorcycle. And the end result is the destination we are taking you to; Lost Coast. Yes all paved roads, but patchy and goaty. Oh did we mention Lost Coast? Haven’t heard of it? Where is that, you might ask.Well let us tell you about it. If you have dreamed of a motorcycle tour over back roads to a forgotten, beautiful, fairly remote, and almost deserted place, then we have a mystical, magical location that we want to take you; “Lost Coast”.
Click on the menu below to browse the tour information:
This tour takes us through Marin County and north along California back roads before reaching one of the most remote coastal areas in California. We will travel through giant redwood groves in Avenue Of The Giants and across into a shimmering valley into a small town where oil was first discovered in California. And then headlong onto the Lost Coast.
And after the ride through Lost Coast we will make our way home through more of the best California goat roads that we can find. The technical difficulty is greater resulting in a slower pace than normal.
But along the way, during this guided California motorcycle tour the incredible views, sights and sounds will stun and amaze you.You will certainly come to realize why this is called “The Lost Coast”. And we think that you too will come to love this place as much as we do. But be warned !! This tour is not for beginners, it is for seasoned riders only.
You don’t want to miss this tour. As we take you along this journey every turn will bring a new adventure. Your adventure begins here! On the Lost Roads Street Motorcycle Tour. California Sport Touring at its finest!!
On day 1, we meet in Sousalito in the San Francisco Bay. We will begin our safety meeting at 715 am and plan on leaving Sousalito at 730 AM. We want to get an early start to cover as much riding time as possible. Be sure to have filled your fuel tank prior to arrival. We will leave Sousalito and travel into the Marin Headlands to explore the abandoned tunnels and bunkers, in the Golden Gate Nationl Recreation Area. After stopping at some key points there and briefly seeing the emplacements, our twisties await our arrival.
We will continue to make our way towards Highway 1. The views that you will see along this route after reaching our key way points will amaze you. Rolling hills and vistas offer up scenic beauty and ever twisting roads offer up riders delight. At this point it feels like you are in another state; A state of bliss as pastoral Marin County offers us a glimpse of what it might be like to live somewhere else. All the while your mind will wander to the road that lies ahead.
After reaching Highway 1 we will head North and turn towards the coast to explore the Point Reyes National Seashore. After reaching our way point we will explore Pierce Point Ranch and take a minute to try and locate a sighting of the many Tule Elk in the area. Are you still smiling? Heading to the area from Highway 1 and back gets your blood pumping on this old goaty road which is lined with working dairy farms that have been designated as national historic preserves. After reaching the 1, we again head north and then we make our way inland. At the highlight of our day we will stop for lunch and recall our morning. Amazing food and good company await. Hungry for more? Well you don’t have to wait long.
After lunch we will head north and stay inland following some of the most scenic back country roads that California has to offer. Delightful goaty roads for fun, heighten your excitement in anticipation of our next days ride. But today is far from over yet. We will find ourselves winding back through to the coast and continue North on the Hwy 1. Our route will take us along a string of roads that we have stitched together with the goal in mind of reaching Fort Bragg . We will wind through each turn grinning from ear to ear and arrive in Fort Bragg for the night after a long day. Settling in for the night we will grab our hotels rooms and then grab some dinner together and marvel in the day and the memories it has already provided us. Its been a long day, but no matter how tired you are you will still be smiling.
Without a doubt, today’s part of the tour is going to take you to places you have never been. We are going to embark on an adventure today that will leave you speechless. A Lighthouses, goat roads, and wild animals? Yes we have that. An untamed wandering spirit that has a lust for adventure? Yes we have that also. If we could take you back in time, to a remote locations, through towering redwood forest, to the beach, and yet still be isolated from the rest of civilization, would you go? Well today’s entire riding segment will be that way, all day.Turn by turn, we will discover that the remoteness of the locations we are riding in only serve to heighten our awareness of the beauty and solitude of the moments that will take our breath away all day. Are you still smiling? After having breakfast we will again head north along the coast and then begin riding one of the twistyest roads in California. Over 372 corners in 24 miles or so I am told. If that doesn’t get you pumped I don’t know what will. This road is prime and glassy smooth and delivers unparralled riding. You will wonder why you haven’t ridden this road before.
Reaching the 101 we will head North until we reach our Westward turn off. After turning towards the coast we will take Briceland Road to the small coastal fishing community of Shelter Cove. Along the way to lunch we may will check out the historic Cape Mendcino lighthouse, before sitting down at the deli for a nice round of fresh fish and chips. And as we eat the laughter and stories will flow as we recall our morning. I am sure by this time you will still be smiling. Although hopefully you won’t be hungry.
After lunch we will return East and then head north and travel through the Avenue of The Giants. We will have a brief stop here but we are saving the exploration of these mighty trees for later. Saving the best for last? Well yes we are. Almost. Our day is about to get a whole lot more interesting.
After turning towards the coast we will head West through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, taking a narrow goaty road through thick redwood forest and rising up a steep grade. Turning through each twist we will skillfully navigate through the road hazards we encounter, dropping sharply down the other side of the grade into the Mattole Valley reaching the bridge at Honeydew.
After reaching Honeydew we will pause for a photo opportunity at the bridge and then continue West along the Mattole river to the small town of Petrolia.
Once named New Jerusalem this small town was where the first oil wells were drilled in 1865. Not too much to take in but we may pause at the small general store for water and a short break.
After leaving the store in Petrolia we will head West to the coast. And this is where the magic begins. We will travel out of town and look for wildlife along the way. Zebras you say? Hmmm. Yes they have been spotted in these parts and if we are lucky and they show we will stop for a minute before continuing West. As we are approaching the coast it will seem as though the horizon is a backdrop that suddenly vanishes and there in front of us will be the “Lost Coast” And as we make our way along the coast headed North, we will stop along the way at probably one of the most unique bridges that I have come across. It is made out of a flatbed rail car. No kidding.
After heading North we will leave the coast and begin twisting our way inland. Some of the road has been washed out here and parts are gravel. Welcome to the goat. Off camber surfaces, potholes, and gravel await. Nothing but miles and miles of goat road that will take us North to Ferndale. But you will still be awash in the glow of the amazing coast that you have just ridden. Arriving in Ferndale we will slow down through town to enjoy the old Victorian village and then continue on to Fortuna.
Arriving in Fortuna we will fuel up for the next days departure and settle in to our hotels. And after settling in for the night the we once again find ourselves sharing stories and good times, at the Eel River Brewing Company. One thing will remain on your mind well into the night; the amazing roads that you just had the pleasure of riding your motorcycle on. As we we head back to our hotel and close out our night, you will be anticipating the next days ride. And oh yes, you are in for a treat!!
Leaving Fortuna we will head south and ride through The Avenue Of The Giants. Now for many who have not experienced this treat you will be in awe of the stunning beauty of the trees and their size. We will take a relaxed pace through this area so that you can take in all of the sotes and sounds. Stopping in the middle of this are we will take a break and explore the Founders Grove. And once you have captured your senses, we will head south and out of the Avenue Of The Giants. When we first rode from Fort Bragg north, you were already calculating the days until you could return to ride this same stretch of road. Well why wait? Cause we are headed back to Fort Bragg. Oh yes, time to get your twisty on. Set your music to loud on your Ipod, rock the throttle (just a bit ) and enjoy this fascinating stretch of road again.
We will fuel up and eat lunch in Fort Bragg and make our way south to Point Arena Lighthouse. Taking time there we will explore the lighthouse and offer you a chance to see the small museum there as well. And although climbing the stairs to reach the top of the lighthouse may be challenging the view is amazing at the top. And after you have captured the beauty of the California coast from a birds-eye-view we are ready to head south again.
After carving our way South again, along the coast, we will stop at the Stewarts Point store for a small break. And then we are plunging headlong into Stwearts Point road with the goal of riding the world famous “Skaggs” as in Skaggs Springs Road.
Now your first impression is that this back road is going to lead to nowhere. But as it suddenly dumps you onto the smooth and perfectly curved road it becomes, it is then clear that the end destination was worth the wait.
Our inital road surface will be mildly goaty, and after several miles will give way to the ultimate canyon carving paradise known to the locals as “Skaggs” After possible laps on Skaggs, we will continue East past Lake Sonoma and then South towards Napa. We will end our ride at a small roadside burger stand with world famous gormet burgers in St Helena.
It has been an awesome 3 days of non-stop action and turn by turn grins. But sadly the party is over and its time to head home. And as we leave the burger stand and go our separate ways its begins to dawn on us that this is the first of many of these trips we must take together.
This is our ride. This is our journey. This is what makes riding in California a dream to others. We are privledged to live here and ride here. And we would be honered to take yu to these amazing places.
Ride with us on our Lost Coast Dual Sport Adventure Tour. A dual sport riders paradise. Your adventure begins here!!
